VDE Update Information:
version 1.85, 21 Jan 1998
(c)1998, E. Meyer
================================== NEWS =====================================
ORDERING INFORMATION
See the order form (ORDER.FRM) for current fees for registration, site
licenses, and updates. Please provide all information requested.
VDE ONLINE
Discussion of VDE is now supported on an Internet mailing list. To join,
send the E-mail message "subscribe" to:
vde-request@twty.chi.il.us
(You will receive a welcome message with further instructions.) VDE updates
and related software can also be obtained from this list server. To see
what's available, send the message "get files" to:
ftpmail@twty.chi.il.us
To request a specific file by return mail, send the message "get FILENAME".
(The Glendale Litera BBS, which had long been a discussion site and
distribution point for VDE, has gone offline.)
Many VDE files can also be found on private Web pages, including:

FASTWRITE DISCONTINUED
ACE Technologies, who marketed a version of VDE called "FastWRITE" for HP
LX palmtops, went out of business in late 1996. VDE now offers full support
for HP palmtops itself. FastWRITE users may take a $10 discount on an
individual registration for VDE, by enclosing proof of purchase of FastWRITE
when ordering direct from the author (discount not available through PSL).
=============================== UPDATE GUIDE ================================
Users of previous versions of VDE will notice the following changes in
operation. Please refer to the instructions for full details.
NEW IN VDE 1.85
* The commands to define and record macros (formerly Esc[, Esc") have
been improved and renamed. The new commands are much simpler:
^M = define Macro
^M^M = record Macro (^M again ends recording)
After entering a macro at the prompt, ^[Enter] will now bypass the
further prompts (Store, Quiet, etc) and simply repeat the macro (visibly)
until you press [Esc].
The "Use or Store" question now asks instead "Use or store to F1-@F12":
storing no longer requires two steps (pressing "S" and then the F-key). See
DEFINING and RECORDING MACROS.
^JM (as well as ^JE) will now display the Macro/Esc help page.
* VDE command prompts now allow editing of input with the following keys:
[<],[>] (arrow keys) position cursor in string
[BkSp],[Del] delete character to left, right
This can save a great deal of needless retyping, especially when entering
complex macros. (Note: entering these keys themselves in a macro may now
require pressing ^P first.) See PROMPTS.
* The file browser can now also be invoked from the ^KW (block write)
prompt, to select a file to append to; and from AltU (load .VDx) to select a
data file to load. (For AltU, the default directory is the VDE directory,
and filespec *.VD? not *.*.)
Also, the browser now shows ALL subdirectories present, to make
navigation easier. (Formerly, like most "DIR" commands, it showed only those
whose name matched the given filespec.) See FILE BROWSER.
* VINST offers two new selections under <I>nstallation: for 132-column
mode (AltA), there is a new selection "V" for VESA compliant, which works on
nearly all brands of video cards made in the last few years.
For keyboard type, there are now three choices: "T"est, as normal
default, in addition to overrides "A"T and "X"T. (The "A"T setting used to
test, but apparently the test can fail in some situations, such as under
Windows NT 4.0, causing AT-only keys to be unrecognized.) See INSTALLATION.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
VDE 1.84 UPDATE SUMMARY (Sep 1997)
* A new command Esc*m makes the file match command AltM treat hard CRs as
whitespace rather than a potential mismatch. See TOGGLE CONTROL.
* The auto-number command ^K# now has multiple options, not only to set a
starting number, but also continue numbering from the last use; align flush;
use Roman numerals; or use a different marker character. See AUTO NUMBER.
* Minor improvements: ^[Tab] now inserts spaces if Insert on. Spell
checking (AltJ) recognizes words hyphenated at the ends of lines. /F mode
can now read some larger WordPerfect files. The message reporting the number
of changes for ^QA has been moved into the header.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
VDE 1.83 UPDATE SUMMARY (May 1997)
* A new command Esc@ can alphabetically compare two strings; a macro can
now sort the lines of a file. See SORTING and MACRO PROGRAMMING EXAMPLES.
* New commands show the value of the macro counter: Esc(H) displays it
briefly in the header, while Esc(T) writes it into the file text.
* Command prompts now offer two new features: ^[ enters text from the
currently marked block. (See PROMPT AUTOMATION) And function keys may now
be used at any input prompt.
* A new command Esc*t allows you to choose not to trim spaces from the
ends of lines when saving nondocuments to disk, and Esc*U now unloads the
speller once it's been invoked, recovering its memory. See TOGGLE CONTROL.
* File mode /X now allows a left margin setting, and both /X and /L modes
now set both margins when you load a file. Also, only printer codes
supported in the current file mode now display or act as such.
* Preview mode (^OD) now highlights text affected by print toggles.
* Replace (^QA) now reports the number of instances changed.
* The MenuBar offers a new command {Block:Goto}, for ^QB.
* AltE has been revised, and offers slightly different choices.
* VINST can now read and write individual function key definitions to
data files (.VDK), and thus move a definition from one set (.VDF) to another.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
VDE 1.82 UPDATE SUMMARY (Jan 1997)
* A new command Esc*L allows you to override VDE's file exclusions and
access any files you like. See FILE COMMANDS.
* When reformatting causes rejoining of a hyphenated word in file modes
without soft hyphens (/A,U,M,X,L), a placemark is now left there.
* VDE's HP LX palmtop installations offer improved support: the [MENU]
key brings up the MenuBar; battery saving features are supported; the [ZOOM]
key now works while editing. See INSTALLATION. Also [in 1.82A], a new file
mode /L handles "formatted" files created by the built-in MEMO editor (see
FILE MODES) and an icon VDE.ICN is provided to install VDE for launch from
the Application Manager (see SPECIAL INSTALLATIONS).
* Minor improvements: accented letters (ASCII 80-A5h) are now treated
more like letters (their case can often be reversed, etc). Display of a
file's "Saved" time and date by AltK follows the user's choice of formats (in
VINST). The speller menu no longer hides the context of a word on the first
3 lines of the file. The ^OH,^OV commands, whose status is not visible in
the header, now show it briefly when used. The ^KP print option menu can now
be scrolled for viewing on narrow screens (like many other menus) with the
left/right arrow keys.
* Deletions: The outdated ^PG print pause feature has been removed.
There is no longer a VINST option to handle quirks of older Tandy keyboards.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
VDE 1.81 UPDATE SUMMARY (Sep 1996)
* A new command ^OO allows you to set an automatic initial (first line)
indent for paragraphs. See INDENTING.
* A new command Esc/ allows adjustments to margins or page length that
work without knowing what the previous value actually was, primarily for use
in macros. See VALUE ADJUSTMENT.
* A new option /1-8 can be used with a wildcard filespec to automatically
load (up to) that many of the specified files. Also, a file mode can be now
used with wildcard arguments. See SYNTAX, FILE COMMANDS.
* The screen shift command Alt[>] (right arrow) can now go as far as you
like, unrestricted by the length of text on the cursor line.
* VINST offers a new installation option to control VDE's search for a
mouse driver. If you have trouble with mouse operation, you can disable it;
if VDE doesn't detect your mouse, you can enable it. See INSTALLATION.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
VDE 1.8 UPDATE SUMMARY (Aug 1995)
* A new ^KN command toggles column block mode, and ^KI determines whether
column block operations insert or replace existing text. A macro toggle
command Esc*C is also provided. See COLUMN BLOCK MODE.
* VDE now recognizes the motion of a mouse (if installed) for moving the
cursor through file text. Pressing the main/left button while moving marks a
block, just like the Shift-arrow keys.
* VDE now allows the up/down arrows (or mouse) to position the cursor
temporarily beyond the end of a line of text. See MOVING THE CURSOR.
* A new command ^\ copies the character above the cursor, making it easy
to duplicate parts of lines.
* A new command ^[Tab] tabs to the column of the next nonblank in the
previous line, for automatic alignment with existing columns.
* A new command ^OY toggles hard reformat mode, to convert text with hard
returns into a formatted paragraph with soft returns. Esc*Y is also provided
for macro control. See HARD REFORMAT.
* A new command ^KU removes all place marks (^KM) from the file.
* A new command Esc*S controls whether single lines of text are realigned
when manual reformat (^B) is used.
* A new option /R causes a file to be loaded in protected mode, as if the
file had been Read/Only.
* The file information command, formerly ^KI, has been changed to AltK,
and the arrow and Enter keys can now be used to move to another file.
* The backward repeat find command, formerly ^\, has been changed to ^H;
the former ^Q[Del] command is now ^Q[BkSp]. (The following keys are no
longer equivalent in most contexts: [Enter] and ^M; ^[Enter] and ^J; [BkSp]
and ^H; [Tab] and ^I; [Esc] and ^[; ^[Ins] and ^].)
* In Find/Replace, the former "I"gnore-case option is now simply "C"ase.
In documents, Find now allows for whitespace between words. The command-line
option "[_]" can now contain spaces or punctuation, and follows your default
for case-sensitivity.
* The Alt[Tab] command can also produce a hard tab in variable tab mode.
* ^QP can now be used after a block paste, copy, read, or undelete
operation (AltP, ^KC, ^KR, ^U) to locate the end of the newly inserted text.
[VDE 1.8D,F]
* The ^QB,^QK,^QM commands now display a visible error ("Not Found") when
the relevant marker is not present.
* Non-document file modes (/N,/C) now remove all spaces at the ends of
lines (thus hardening CRs) when saving to disk. File compatibility with
WordStar and MS Word (modes /S,/M) has been improved. [VDE 1.8F]
* VINST no longer offers a choice of behavior for the [BkSp], [Del],
[Home], and [End] keys, or an "Align page with screen" option.
